Steel Hexagons are long steel bars having 6 sides. They are used in a number of engineering products such as nuts, bolts, hydraulic fittings, machined components etc The most popular grades used for Steel Hexagons or hex are:Free Cutting Steel Hex such as En1a and En1a(Pb). The black steel bars are drawn through dies of the required shape. The raw material is chosen depending on the shape to be drawn. This increases the yield strength and tensile strength. This also eliminates a number of surface imperfections caused due to the rolling process.

EN1A is a very popular grade of low carbon-manganese free cutting steel, which is most suitable for the manufacture of repetition turned components, such as nuts, bolts, hydraulic fittings and studs, particularly where intricate drilling and machining operations are involved. It can be case-hardened, producing components with enhanced wear resistance. En1a is also available as En1a leaded (En1aPb) for greater machinability. Swarf will form in small chips to prevent machine blockage.

Some of the shapes are rounds, hexagons, flats, bars, etc. Due to the nature of the process and temperatures involved, precise control of tolerances that can be achieved in bright bars cannot be achieved in black steel bars. Therefore they are further processed to make steel bright bars for processes that require more precise accuracies. Therefore black steel bars are less expensive than bright bars.
