Axial bellows are thin walled cylindrical components. Their surface area features a corrugated structure which is perpendicular to the cylinder axis. Because of this corrugated structure the bellows are highly flexible during axial, lateral andor angular.

Axial Expansion Joints are the simplest type of expansion joints using single bellow unit.Stainless steel expansion joints are compact requiring virtually no additional space beyond the length of bellows and weld ends or flanges for installation. Axial Expansion Joints have further advantage of not imposing a change in the direction of flow. Where small thermal movements are involved and where proper anchoring and guiding is possible, single axial bellows provide the most economical solution.

A flexible element either with flange end or Butt Weld End to absorb any combination of three basic movements. i.e. Axial movement, Lateral deflection and Angular rotation along the axis of the pipe line.Axial Bellows do not control the movement of the pipes and in case the piping analysis indicate that the expansion joint should accept axial compression, then in that case the piping must be guided and constrained so that only that movement occurs.Axial Bellows Expansion Joints do not resist any deflections with any force other than the resistance of the bellows and is incapable of resisting the pressure thrust along its axis. In general, Axial Bellows are the most economical of all types.

Axial Expansion Joints have one bellows. Axial Compression and extension, lateral and angular movement can be accommodated. These expansion joints can not retain the internal pressure thrust. Tied Axial Expansion Joints also have one bellows, except that their length is restrained by tie rods which can accept the pressure generated thrust. When under pressure they are usually not designed to accept any axial movement, but can accept lateral movement. The two tied rod designs can accept angular deflection in a single plane.
