RC networks are used across the coils of the contactors, to protect them from the undesirable transient voltages that are generated during switching off of contactor coils. The induced transient voltage surges can be several times the rated voltage of the coil and can damage the coil of the contactor. These induced voltages also have a high frequency of the order of several KHz and generate noise. RC networks connected in parallel to the coils of the contactors effectively suppress the surge voltages by absorbing the energy contained in the transients and safely discharging them. The RC networks also filter out the noise generated by the transients.

Electrical equipments are continuously subjected to abnormal voltage due to internal and external reasons. These may occur on account of lightening, switching operations, system faults and other abnormal conditions. Surge capacitors are capable of bringing down the steepness of over voltage transients that may appear across the transformers, motors and other AC line connected equipments. Unless the transients are swamped effectively, they may cause catastrophic failure of these devices. By reducing the slope of incoming surge, conventional arresters fitted in conjunction with surge capacitors, the level get truncated before operating across the insulation of a device. Surge capacitors are designed to withstand and absorb damped or oscillatory line disturbances without affecting the main frequency performance at the point of common coupling. SHARDA surge protection capacitors are of special type capacitors. Its application is of specialized nature i.e. in case of abnormal condition. These capacitors are designed for protection of large rotating machines such as motors & generators. At the time of over voltage during electric storms produces surges to electrical equipment’s connected to system. The voltage stress between turns of multi turn coil sets a limitation and surge voltage causes breakdown of turn to turn insulation resulting in short circuited turns.The surge capacitors restrict the applied surge to a point remote from the point of connection to the equipment to the system.
