OIL SEAL AND O-RING    * Oil Seals prevent lubricants from escaping, keep contaminants from entering and help stop intermixture of different mediums.Oil seals can be made from paper, real or synthetic rubber and can be found wrapped around shafts in a variety of effective ways. But in addition to sealing two surfaces, an O ring can also provide lubrication, depending on its material, such as between a piston and the piston wall.   *An O ring is a simple form of a seal. It closes off a gap between two surfaces so that liquids or gases cannot pass through in any direction. The shape of an O ring is akin to that of a doughnut - or torus in its correct mathematical description - from which it derives its name. Nitrile Rubber is the most widely used elastomer in the seal Industry. Excellent resistance to petroleum products and its ability to be compounded for service over a wide temperature range has made Nitrile a very popular material. Nitrile is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile.Specific properties can be achieved by varying the proportions of these individual polymers.Acrylonitrile content in Nitrile can be varied from 18% to 50% by weight. Nominal designations are ‘low’ (18 to 24%), ‘medium’ (28% to 33%) and ‘high’ (38% and higher) Nitrile. An increase in acrylonitrile content increases heat as well as chemical resistance to petroleum base oils and fuels but decreases low temperature flexibility. Nitrite provides excellent compression set, tear resistance, cold flow and abrasion resistance. The major limiting properties of nitrile are its poor ozone and weather resistance and moderate heat resistance. Hydrogenated – NBR are used in applications requiring high wear and chemical resistance.

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber commonly referred to as NBR, Nitrile or BUNA. Good physical characteristics and chemical resistance to the most common hydraulic fluids makes NBR an excellent sealing material. NBR materials are one of the most used elastomers in sealing applications.

In the areas of heat resistance, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and oil additive resistance, H-NBR exhibits improved performance characteristics over non-hydrogenated Nitrile, while showing about five times strength sour gasoline and ozone resistance. Tensile strength at 77°F has been increased from 2,900psi for Nitrile, to 4350 psi for H-NBR.
