A Water Softener is an equipment that removes the Hardness (i.e. Ca and Mg ions) of the influent water to render the effluent water 'Soft'. Having come a long way from the days of Lime - Soda Softening and Zeolite based Softening process, today's Softener is a pressure vessel filled with 'Strongly Acidic Cation Resin' in Sodium form. The Ca / Mg ions are exchanged for (replaced by) Na ions held on the resin matrix. When all exchangeable Na ions are replaced, the resin is 'exhausted' and is 'regenerated' by a 12-13% solution of Brine (Nacl).
