SA 8000 Social Accountability Social Accountability 8000 (SA-8000) has been developed by Social Accountability International (SAI), known until recently as the Council on Economic Priorities Accreditation Agency. SAI is a non-profit affiliate of the Council on Economic Priorities (CEP). SA-8000 is promoted as a voluntary, universal standard for companies interested in auditing and certifying labour practices in their facilities and those of their suppliers and vendors. It is designed for independent third party certification. C-TPAT member-certified importers, carriers, brokers, warehouse operators, and manufacturers work together to ensure the integrity of their security practices, communicate their security guidelines to business partners within the supply chain and verify the guidelines of those partners. This is a Compliance Management System. The Scope of this Compliance Management System to increase the accountability of management over supply chain events and partners to prevent the introduction of weapons of terrors into the trade network. For those business partners eligible for C-TPAT certification (carriers, ports, terminals, brokers, consolidators, etc.) the importer must have documentation (e.g., C-TPAT certificate, SVI number, etc.) indicating whether these business partners are or are not C-TPAT certified. The ISO 27001 standard was published in October 2005, essentially replacing the old BS7799-2 standard. It is the specification for an ISMS, an Information Security Management System. BS7799 itself was a long standing standard, first published in the nineties as a code of practice. As this matured, a second part emerged to cover management systems. It is this against which certification is granted. Today in excess of a thousand certificates are in place, across the world. ISO 27001 enhanced the content of BS7799-2 and harmonized it with other standards. Sedex Now Has Full Global Reach, with More Than 400 Retailers and Branded Goods Manufacturers Using the System. The Sites of At Least 22,000 Suppliers are Registered Within the Database. During 2008, Unilever Started to Invite Its Suppliers to Register with Sedex in Order to Complete the Social and Environmental Assessment of Their Sites. By the End of 2010, Approximately 1 500 Suppliers to Unilever Had Been Invited to Register with Sedex, and Complete Their Self-assessments, and 400 Audits Had Been Completed By Third-party Audit Companies to Verify Suppliers’ Operational Practices.
