When two aqueous solutions of different concentrations are separated by a semi permeable membrane, naturally occurring osmotic pressure forces dilute solutions into the concentrated solution. This natural phenomena is called Osmosis which continues until equilibrium between the two solutions is reached. The flow’s natural direction can be reversed by applying pressure greater than the osmotic pressure to the concentrated solution. This process of reversal of solvent flow in known as “Reverse Osmosis (RO)”. Maintenance of RO involves the replacement of RO membrane & pre-filter cartridge. The price of any Reverse Osmosis System should be related to output and quality of water processed. Output depends on membrane size & construction, feed water quality and pressure. Quality of water is the percentage of purity claimed. Normally if TDS is increased over the amount the system is design for then the output capacity diminishes.
