Cottonseed oil falls to about fourth or fifth in the world production of oils, as relatively low amount of oil is extracted from the seed say about 18% only. Major amount of cottonseed which is unprocessed is fed to the cattle especially dairy cattle to enhance the production of milk. Oilseed Cottonseed has increased its presence in the kitchen in the past 20 years and over this last years the cotton plants grown to produce cotton fibre and animal feed is also genetically modified to generate better product results. Oilseed cotton seed has a similar structure as of other oilseeds like sunflower seed. The oil bearing kernel is surrounded by hard outer hull and in the processing the oil is extracted from the cottonseed. The cottonseed oil today is very largely used in the households as it is cheaper then groundnut oil in day to day life.

Once a waste-disposal problem for gins, cottonseed is now a valuable by-product. The seed goes to oil mills, where it is delinted of its linters in an operation similar to ginning. The bare seed is then cracked and the kernel removed. The meal that remains after the oil has been extracted is high in protein.
