HRSCC is mostly used in applications wherein a large variation in the inlet conditions has to be tolerated by the system. After coagulation andor flocculation in the sludge blanket units, the incoming water passes through the suspended layer of previously formed floc. "Solids-contact" refers to units in which large volumes of sludge are circulated internally. The term also describes the sludge blanket unit and simply means that prior to and during sedimentation the chemically treated water contacts previously coagulated solids. Solids-contact, slurry pool units do not rely on filtration as in sludge blanket designs.

Softners
The water will be called as "hard" if it contains calcium or magnesium salts dissolved in it. A water softener reduces the dissolved calcium and magnesium salts in hard water. These "hardness ions" cause undesired effects like hindering the ability of detergents to lather and forming a precipitate and forming scales to the surfaces of pipes and heat exchanger surfaces Ion-exchange materials contain sodium ions (Na+) that are electrostatically bound and that readily are replaced by hardness ions such as Ca2+ and Mg2+. Ion exchange resins are organic polymers containing anionic functional groups to which the Na+ is bound. The water to be treated passes through a bed of the resin. The resins initially contain univalent sodium ions, which exchange with divalent calcium and magnesium ions in the water. As the water passes through the resin column, the hardness ions replace the sodium ions which are released into the water. The "harder" the water, the more sodium ions are released from the resin and into the water. As these resins become loaded with undesirable cations they gradually lose their effectiveness and must be regenerated. Reverse Osmosis System
The availability of potable drinking water devoid of dissolved and un dissolved salts, bacterial contamination, viral contamination and fungal contamination is a challenge for human beings across the globe. Nanofiltration, in concept and operation, is much the same as reverse osmosis. The key difference is the degree of removal of monovalent ions such as chlorides. Reverse osmosis removes the monovalent ions at 98-99% level at 200 psi. Nanofiltration membranes’ removal of monovalent ions varies between 50% to 90% depending on the material and manufacture of the membrane. For this reason, there is a variety of Nanofiltration membranes available. Each type is particularly suited to a certain application and may not be acceptable to a different application. The term "multi -grade,” refers to a type of filter bed which is graded by size of sand. Coarse less dense particles are at the top of the filter bed, and fine, denser particles are at the bottom. Down flow filtration allows deep, uniform penetration by particulate matter and permits high filtration rates and long service runs. Because small particles at the bottom are also more dense (less space between particles), they remain at the bottom. Even after high-rate backwashing, the layers remain in their proper location in the mixed media filter bed.

A mixed bed exchanger has both cation and anion resin mixed together in a single vessel. As water flows through the resin bed, the ion exchange process is repeated many times, "polishing" the water to a very high purity. During regeneration, the resin is separated into distinct cation and anion fractions. The resin is separated by backwashing, with the lighter anion resin settling on top of the cation resin. Regenerant acid is introduced through the bottom distributor, and caustic is introduced through distributors above the resin bed. The regenerant streams meet at the boundary between the cation and anion resin and discharge through a collector located at the resin interface. Following regenerant introduction and displacement rinse, air and water are used to mix the resins. Then the resins are rinsed, and the unit is ready for service.

Lamella Clarifier
Lamella clarifiers maximize the particle settling by the use of inclined lamella parallel plates to increase the settling surface area. Influent first enters the clarifier through the flash mix tank where it is rapidly mixed with a polymer flocculants to allow the particles to separate from the water and coagulate into larger particles. Then the water enters a slow mix chamber which gently agitates the waterpolymer mix and further increases the particle size. The water flows down a settling chamber in the center channel of the clarifier and enters the plate packs through the sides and bottom. As the water flows up the plate packs the solids settle on the plate packs and slide into the sludge hopper at the bottom of the unit. The clean water at the top of the unit enters into flumes through orifices then flow to the outlet chamber.
