In internal combustion engines, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction technique used in petrol/gasoline and diesel engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. This dilutes the O2 in the incoming air stream and provides gases inert to combustion to act as absorbents of combustion heat to reduce peak in-cylinder temperatures. NOx is produced in high temperature mixtures of atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen that occur in the combustion cylinder, and this usually occurs at cylinder peak pressure. Another primary benefit of external EGR valves on a spark ignition engine is an increase in efficiency, as charge dilution allows a larger throttle position and reduces associated pumping losses.

the diesel turbo has two important sections: the turbine and compressor. The turbine housing is what draws the exhaust gases and rotates the turbine wheel. The turbine wheel is attached to the compressor wheel via a shaft. When the turbine wheel rotates, it causes the compressor wheel to spin. This action compresses the air and pushes it into the engine's combustion chamber. Compressed air can burn with a greater amount of fuel to provide more power. This is the basic mechanism behind the turbocharger. Most turbochargers also include an intercooler installed between them and the engine. This cools the compressed air from the turbocharger, before it is delivered to the engine. Compressed air when cooled becomes more denser and hence can burn a large amount of fuel than compressed air at the normal temperature.
