Vermiculite is a term applied commercially to micaceous minerals (essentially hydrated silicates of Al, Mg and Fe), usually alteration products of biotite or phlogopite micas, formed by the removal of much alkalies and addition of water. Vermiculite differs from mica in its characteristic property, i.e., exfoliation. Crude vermiculite is mostly exfoliated before use. In order to convert raw vermiculite into a product suitable for industrial use, it must be exfoliated or expanded by heating, a process termed 'exfoliation'.   Uses Horticultural : Vermiculite is known for its horticultural applications. It is a common component in potting soils. Unfoliated (unexpanded) vermiculite has only minor uses, such as for circulation in drilling muds and in the annealing of steel. Insulation : Vermiculite is chemically inert, fireproof, nonconductor of electricity and a good insulator against heat (both radiant and conducted), cold and sound. Unlike cork and other organic light weight insulating material, it does not rot and is not attacked by vermin and has a fair mechanical strength. Carrier : It is also used as a carrier in fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides. Binding Agent : Cementing mixtures of exfoliated vermiculite and binding agents such as gypsum and plaster, have been important products and are applied to structural steel members in commercial buildings. Fireproof Plaster/ Refractory Board : The mineral is used in various types of building boards. Fine-sized, untreated vermiculite concentrates are included in the preparation of fireproof plaster boards. The exfoliated product forms the basis of some light weight plasterboard, whilst ground, exfoliated vermiculite is used in various refractory board products. The principal uses of expanded vermiculite are based on its thermal insulating quality (due to presence of innumerable air cells), low-density, fireproof nature and granular form. Thermal Insulation : Larger vermiculite granules are used as a loose fill for thermal insulation for homes, industrial structures, cold storage, refrigeration and high temperature and low temperature industrial equipment. The high absorbency and chemical inertness of exfoliated vermiculite have made it suitable for a wide range of absorbent packing materials as well as for packaged units for the spill containment of oil and similar liquids.

Talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate. The properties of talc that enables its use in a wide variety of applications are its extreme softness & smoothness, good lustre & sheen, high slip & lubricating property, low moisture content, ability to absorb oil & grease, chemical inertness, high fusion point, low electrical & heat conductivity, high dielectric strength, good retention for filler purposes, whiteness, good hiding power as pigment and high specific heat. In addition, it has the advantage of being relatively abundant. It can be easily mined and prepared for market. Rajasthan is the hub of talc activity in India   Grade A. The colour of the mineral is pure white to slightly green. The whiteness is in the range from 90 to 95%. It is used in producing pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.   Grade B It is known as the second quality material. The colour is pale-greenish to white. The whiteness is in the range from 85 to 90%. It is used in producing superior-grade paper, textile and ceramics.   Grade C It is known as the third quality material. The colour is light greenish-grey. Whiteness is in the range from 78 to 85%. It is used in paper (inferior grade), paint, rubber, plastic and detergent industries.   Grade D It is known as the fourth quality or DDT grade. The material having whiteness of 78% or below is generally classified under this grade. The colour of the material is dark greenish-grey to reddish-green.   Uses Ceramics Filler Talc is used in manufacturing of ceramics products such as bathroom fixtures, ceramic tile, pottery and dinnerware. When used as a filler in ceramics, talc can improve the firing characteristics and strength of the finished product.   Paint extender and filler Talc is an excellent filler in paint because it simultaneously serves to whiten and brighten the paint. Talc's low hardness is valued because it causes less abrasion damage on spray nozzles and other equipment when paint is applied.   Paper Talc as a mineral fillers can improve the opacity, brightness and whiteness of the paper. Talc also can also improve the paper's ability to absorb ink.   Cosmetics and Antiperspirants The ability of talc to absorb moisture, absorb odor, adhere to the skin, serve as a lubricant used as an ingredient in cosmetic products. Talc's softness allows it to be applied and removed without causing skin abrasion.   Carrier for Insecticides and Fungicides Talc powder is used as a carrier for insecticides and fungicides. Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content, typically formed by the hydration of obsidian. It occurs naturally and has the unusual property of greatly expanding when heated sufficiently. It is an industrial mineral and a commercial product useful for its low density after processing. It has an unusual characteristic of expanding, or "popping," up to 20 times its original volume upon being exposed to rapid, controlled heating. Rapidly heating perlite ore to temperatures of about 900°C (1,700°F) softens the volcanic glass, causing entrapped water molecules in the rock to turn to steam and expand the particles like popcorn. The resulting expanded particles—actually clusters of minute glass bubbles—are spherical in shape, usually fluffy or frothy, highly porous due to a foam-like cellular internal structure, and have a very low density.   Uses Insulation : Perlite is used as an aggregate for lightweight, insulating concrete in roof decking, floors, decorative stone, bricks and tiles, tilt-up panels, pottery, cast sculpture, and more.
