Lisinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. It works by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood.
Indications:
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
Congestive heart failure
Post-myocardial infarction (improves survival)
Diabetic nephropathy (protects kidneys in patients with diabetes and high blood pressure)
Dosage Form:
Tablet
Strength:
10mg of Lisinopril per tablet
Mechanism of Action:
Lisinopril inhibits the ACE enzyme, which prevents the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor. This leads to vasodilation, reduced blood pressure, and decreased workload on the heart.
Common Side Effects:
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Dry cough
Headache
Fatigue
Elevated blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia)
Serious but Rare Side Effects:
Angioedema (swelling of face, lips, or throat) – medical emergency
Kidney dysfunction
Precautions:
Not recommended during pregnancy (can harm the fetus)
Monitor renal function and electrolyte levels regularly
Avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium
Storage:
Store at room temperature (15°C to 30°C). Keep in a dry place, away from light and moisture.
