Permethrin 5% w/w is a topical medication used to treat scabies and lice infestations. It is a synthetic form of a natural insecticide derived from chrysanthemum flowers. It paralyzes and kills mites and their eggs.
🔹 Indications:
Scabies: A skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei
Pediculosis (lice): May be used off-label in some cases (usually 1% used for head lice)
🔹 Usage Instructions (for scabies):
Apply a thin layer of the cream to clean, dry skin from the neck down to the soles of the feet (include under nails, between fingers and toes, etc.).
Leave it on for 8 to 14 hours (usually overnight).
Wash off thoroughly with soap and water.
Wash clothing, bedding, and towels used within 48 hours in hot water.
🔹 Common Side Effects:
Mild burning or stinging
Itching or redness at the application site (can persist due to the body’s allergic response even after the mites are killed)
Rash
🔹 Precautions:
For external use only
Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes
Not recommended for infants under 2 months
Use with caution in people with allergies to chrysanthemum or ragweed
