The land and climate of the Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts (WB) is suitable for cultivating MadurKathi. The sticks can be reaped for a period of 3-4 years once the rhizomes are sown. Madhurkathi was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indication Registry in April 2018.
