Ozone is a clear, blue coloured gas that produces an easily detected pungent odour at concentrations as low as 5 parts per million (ppm) in atmospheric air. Ozone (O3) is formed when an oxygen molecule (O2) is forced to bond with a third atom of oxygen (O). The third atom is only loosely bound to the molecule, making ozone highly unstable. This property makes ozone an excellent oxidising agent and ideal for use in all water treatment plants, and air purification systems Ozone is generally rapid oxidant. The third oxygen atom in its molecule makes ozone very reactive (chemically active). The third oxygen atom easily react with molecules of pollutants such as odors, bacteria, viruses and molds and places them in a less complex (and generally less harmful) molecules in a process called oxidation. After application, ozone turns back to oxygen, which means it is very environmentally friendly. Ozone is the second most powerful oxidant. It is widely used to supplement or replace chlorine in a variety of processes including water treatment. Oxidants kill microorganisms and precipitate various chemicals. Water treatment applications include public water supplies, bottled water, sewage water treatment, waste water treatment, laundry water treatment, cooling tower water treatment, swimming pools, food and meat processing industries, aqua culture industries, and aquariums.
