This kind of reactors can operate with very high loads in order to treat both industrial and civil effluents in reduced spaces; the amount of adhered activated sludge is higher, therefore the purification capacity is higher: 1 m3 of a typical packing gives from 350 to 500 m2 of surface, and there are 12 g of biomass per m2, thus here are 6 kg of biomass per m3. the mbbr technology can be used in order to enhance existing activated sludge treatment plants, where the amount of pollutants (determined by the cod and bod concentration) is the substrate for the growth of the microorganisms on the bio – film, which degrade the pollutants and therefore purify the water.
