About Toroidal Transformers :Toroidal Transformers are passive electronic components, typically consisting of a circular ring-shaped magnetic core of high magnetic permeability material such as iron powder or ferrite, around which wire is coiled to make an inductor. Toroidal coils are used in a broad range of applications in AC electronic circuits, such as high-frequency coils and transformers. An inductor with a closed-loop core can have a higher magnetic field and thus higher inductance and Q factor than similarly constructed coils with a straight core (solenoid coils). This is because the entire path of the magnetic field lines is within the high permeability core, while in an inductor with a straight core the magnetic field lines emerging from one end of the core have a long air path to enter the other end. In recent years, the use of toroidal (donut) shape cores has increased greatly. The advantage of the toroidal shape is that due to its symmetry the amount of magnetic flux that escapes outside the core (leakage flux) is minimum, therefore it radiates less electromagnetic interference (EMI) to nearby circuits or equipment. EMI is of increasing importance in modern low power, high frequency electronics. A side effect in torus-shaped inductors is that, because the winding surrounds the central hole and the current traverses the winding in a circular direction, there is a weakpoloidal magnetic flux that threads the "donut hole" in the center of the torus, in addition to the main toroidal flux direction parallel to the core of the torus.

Manufacturing process The manufacturing of strips wound cores is a specialized process, which requires a high degree of precision. These cores are manufactured from selected coils of crgo electrical steel to yield closely controlled electro-magnetic characteristics and dimensional accuracy. Cores are wound after slitting is done as per the required shape, on the core winding machine. The winding machine automatically stops when the pre-decided dimension is reached. The start and finish ends are firmly spot welded. After winding, the cores are stress-relief annealed to restore the magnetic properties. The cores are bonded where necessary, to provide increased firmness. All cores are spray painted or varnished (as required by customers) and are tested for magnetic properties. Testing Strip wound cores, unlike strip lamination, constitute a complete product and every core must meet the specified performance requirement. Consequently, quality control in the manufacturing of wound cores is vitally important at every stage of process. Dimensional tolerances The coils of crgo steel from which the cores are manufactured are carefully selected on the basis of tests carried in our laboratories to ensure that the correct grade of steel is used. Strict checks are made at every stage from winding to the final stage of spray painting & varnishing to ensure that the finished product is of a high quality. Moreover, each core is subject to inspection and electrical tests at BSP to make certain that our customers are provided with the specified performance requirement. Basics of Toroidal Transformers Toroidal Transformers are built around a ring-shaped core, which, depending on operating frequency, is made from a long strip of silicon steel or permalloy wound into a coil, powdered iron, or ferrite core. A strip construction ensures that the grain boundaries are optimally aligned, improving the transformer's efficiency by reducing the core's reluctance. The closed ring shape eliminates air gaps inherent in the construction of an E-I core.The cross-section of the ring is usually square or rectangular, but more expensive cores with circular cross-sections are also available.The primary and secondary coils are often wound concentrically to cover the entire surface of the core.This minimizes the length of wire needed, and also provides screening to minimize the core's magnetic field from generating electromagnetic interference.
