Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), sometimes referred to by its subtypes metal inert gas (MIG) welding or metal active gas (MAG) welding, is a welding process in which an electric arc forms between a consumable wire electrode and the workpiece metal(s), which heats the workpiece metal(s), causing them to melt and join. Along with the wire electrode, a shielding gas feeds through the welding gun, which shields the process from contaminants in the air. The process can be semi-automatic or automatic. There are four primary methods of metal transfer in GMAW, called globular, short-circuiting, spray, and pulsed-spray, each of which has distinct properties and corresponding advantages and limitations.  

ER70S-6 MIG Wire is the most common type of welding consumable for welding mild steel and these wires are designed to meet minimum tensile strength requirements of 70,000 psi. This wire incorporates the proper deoxidizer to absorb oxygen so that it vaporizes into the arc or forms as scale oxides. ER70S-6 is better for creating a smooth transition from the weld to the base metal, also known as wash-in or tie-in. Better wash-in may be a requirement in applications subject to fatigue. ER70S-6 wire can provide better wetting at the weld toe when compared to an ER70S-3 wire. A quality MIG wire is critical in robotic welding applications.
