Lithops are some of the world’s most fascinating plants often called “living stones” and found native to South Africa. These are small split succulents mimicking the feature of a stone or a pebble in colors of gray, brown, rust, green and pink, combined beautiful intricate markings.
Lithops grow in inhospitable conditions and that is the reason it almost never has more than one leaf pair per head, presumably as an adaptation to the scarcity of water. Yellow or white flowers emerge from the fissure between the leaves with the help of a meristem after the new leaf pair has fully matured.
Lithops are popular novelty house plants and thrive best in coarse, well-drained substrate. Propagation is through division or seed. Seed is easy to germinate although it takes many months and years to establish and have a flower resembling those of parent plant.
Lithops need strong light to develop hard strongly colored skins which are resistant to damage and rot. Over-watering may cause rupture of the leaves due to excess storage.
Lesser known facts
Some may be wondering why Lithops grow only half an inch against the ground. This habit is to protect themselves from grazing animals and to absorb maximum moisture from the ground.
Lithops due its small size has minimal foliar space to gather sun’s energy. They have a developed some unique transparent area called “windowpanes” on the surface of the leaf. The transparent areas consist of calcium oxalate, which shines and creates a reflection that increases light penetration into the plant.
