Coil cars are a specialized design for the transport of, and or distribution of, coils (i.e., rolls) of sheet metal, wire cable or other such large cabling projects. The body of a coil car commonly consists of a trough or series of troughs which allow the cable to be fed out in a specific direction. Most commonly, and dependant upon the number of coils capable of being fed out at the same time, these run lengthwise, but there are transverse variants as well; in either case they may be lined with wood or other material to cushion the load and prevent long term damage to the coil or the coil car body. The coils are usually set on their sides or on a vertical roller system and the cable or sheet metal is fed through a trough or troughs.
