Kalari Kendram, established in 2004, is a traditional gurukulam dedicated to the ancient and indigenous martial art of Kerala — Kalaripayattu. Rooted in the spiritual and cultural ethos of India, Kalari Kendram serves as a temple of discipline, strength, and self-realization through this sacred art form.
Under the visionary guidance of Gurukkal Shinto Mathew, Kalari Kendram has broken new ground. He is widely regarded as the first Guru to take Kalaripayattu beyond Kerala, introducing this ancient martial tradition to non-Malayalam-speaking communities across India. His pioneering efforts have played a crucial role in transforming this regional treasure into a national heritage — taking Kerala’s art to become the art of India.
Kalari Kendram holds the distinction of being the only Gurukulam to represent India at the World Martial Arts Festival held in Indonesia in 2017. With over 1,000 new enrollments every year, it continues to uphold the timeless values of the Guru-Shishya Parampara — imparting Kalaripayattu through an unaltered and uncommercialized traditional methodology.
Today, Kalari Kendram stands tall with its deep roots in both North and South India, with centres in Delhi and the NCR in North India, and Kozhikode in South India, thereby preserving and spreading the treasured heritage of this ancient Indian martial art.
Recognized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India, Kalari Kendram has received numerous awards and accolades for its unmatched dedication to reviving and sustaining Kalaripayattu. It continues to inspire the younger generation to connect with India’s martial and spiritual roots, fostering pride, discipline, and cultural identity through this living tradition
