Lock nuts are primarily made from stainless steel and other finishes. The nuts do not easily loosen when placed on bolts, making them useful for holding wheel into axles or in automotive engines where machine vibration would otherwise loosen the fastener. Lock nuts are available in wide styles, grades, and finishes. The most common lock nut styles are Anco and Tri-lok nuts. The anco-style lock nut is a self-locking nut with a ratchet pin made from stainless steel whereas the Tri-lok style is a “prevailing-torque” locknut that is frictionally resistant to rotation due to the thread wrap on the top thread of the nut. Lock nuts with an integrated locking mechanism minimize the cost of the shaft as no key is required. Installation is also easier because no locking device is required.
