Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metalcations in hard water. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of scaling and deposition problem. Water softening is usually achieved using lime softening or ion-exchange resins. Ion-exchange resin devices Conventional water-softening equipment installed for industrial use depends on an ion-exchange resin in which "hardness ions" - mainly Ca2+ and Mg2+ - are exchanged for sodium ions. Ion exchange devices reduce the hardness by replacing magnesium and calcium (Mg2+ and Ca2+) with sodium or potassium ions (Na+ and K+)." Ion Exchange-Principle Ion Exchange resins are insoluble granular substances which have in their molecular structure acidic or basic radicals that can be exchanged. The positive or negative ions fixed on these radicals are replaced by ions of the same sign in solution in the liquid in contact with them. Ion Exchanger-Reaction Ion Exchangers are insoluble granular substances which have in their molecular structure acidic or basic radicals that can exchange.
