Cyclone Separator is a high speed rotating machine that is established within a cylindrical or conical container named as cyclone. In a Cyclone Separator the air flows in a helical pattern, beginning at the top (wide end) of the cyclone and ending at the bottom (narrow) end before exiting the cyclone in a straight stream through the center of the cyclone and out the top. The larger (denser) particles in the rotating stream have too much inertia to follow the tight curve of the stream, and strike the outside wall, then falling to the bottom of the cyclone where they can be removed.   The multiple-cyclone separators consist of a number of small-diameter cyclones, operating in parallel and having a common gas inlet and outlet, as shown in the figure. Multiple-cyclone separators operate on the same principle as cyclones, i.e., creating a main downward vortex and an ascending inner vortex. Multiple-cyclone separators are more efficient than single cyclones because they are longer and smaller in diameter. The longer length provides longer residence time while the smaller diameter creates greater centrifugal force. These two factors result in better separation of dust particulates. The pressure drop of multiple-cyclone separators collector is higher than that of single-cyclone separators.

Cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from an air, gas or liquid stream, without the use of filters, through vortex separation. Rotational effects and gravity are used to separate mixtures of solids and fluids. The method can also be used to separate fine droplets of liquid from a gaseous stream. Dust laden gas or air enters the collector tangentially and follows a spiral path to the bottom of the cone. The centrifugal force created by the circular flow throws the dust particles toward the wall of the cyclone. After striking the wall, the combination of the gravitational and swirling forces causes the dust to move downward to the dust outlet. Pressure drop for normal operation is about 3 – 4 inches of water. They are very efficient in collecting dust particles down to 30 microns in size. Efficiency of the equipment depends on the material being conveyed, material/air flow rates, and cyclone design. Depending upon the application, cyclone separator can be designed in single, twin and quad arrangement and multiclone. The dust air enters in to the Cyclone Dust Separator from the top through the inlet pipe, which is tangential to the cylindrical portion of the cyclone. Thus the gases move downwards in whirling motion forming a peripheral vertex and giving rise to centrifugal forces, resulting in throwing of dust particles towards the wall of the cyclone and moving downwards into the hopper. The gases after reaching the end of the conical portion changes its direction and moves upwards towards the outlet forming an inner vertex. Due to this upward movement of gases against gravity more dust particles are separated and fall into the conical hopper for subsequent removal. The large volume of gas makes it difficult to accomplish the desired dust collection efficiency in a single stage cyclone construction. Essentially the function of a cyclone separator is to remove the majority of the dust and debris from the air stream that carries it. It does this by introducing the dust filled air to the cyclone chamber via an inlet mounted tangentially to the cylinder at the top. This causes the air and dust to circulate around the outside of the container, and as such centrifugal forces keeps the particulate matter to the outside edges. The cyclone profile forces the air stream and dust particles down into the conical shaped container where the cone shape creates a cyclone with higher centrifugal air speed. This higher air speeds in the cone will throw the dust particles, both large and small, off to the side and the clean air is vented out.

Cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from an air stream, without the use of filters, through vortex separation. Rotational effects and gravity are used to separate the particle from the dust laden air. Cyclone body will be cylindrical in the top portion and conical shape at the bottom as shown in the drawing. The air stream will enter into the cyclone body tangentially in the top cylindrical with high velocity. The top portion of the cyclone body guides the air to move in a circular path in high velocity. A cyclonic effect (twister) will be created inside the body and the air stream move downwards in the heavier dust particles in the helical pattern. The heavier particles in the air stream have too much inertia while moving in cyclonic effect and move towards outer peripheral of the cyclonic effect in the air stream. When the particles are striking the inner surface of the cyclonic body, it will lose its momentum and fall down. In a conical system, as the rotating flow moves towards the narrow end of the cyclone, the rotational radius of the stream is reduced, thus separating smaller and smaller particles.             Cyclone is called as pre-collector in the dust extraction system. Cyclone has good efficiency in dust separation for large size particles and fiber dust particles. Cyclone separator will be used to segregation of items or products in the conveying systems.
