The present trend in industry is to replace hydraulic dynamometers with eddy current dynamometers   The basic dynamometer system has two units :   Mechanical absorption unit, and Electronic controller, which incorporates digital indication of speed and torque. Their are three modes of operations like constant speed, constant torque and constant current. Highly powerful fail safe safeties to protect dynamometer are incorporated. Optional computer interface is also available.   The electronic unit plays an important role in operating dynamometer in different modes. ICA offers very efficient and reliable electronic controller. This unit displays torque/load and speed on digital indicator. It offers 3 modes of dynamometer operation by controlling excitation current in the coil through firing angle control of SCR's.   I = Constant ---------------- The inner loop control. T = Constant ---------------- For fixed speed prime movers. N = Constant ---------------- For variable speed prime movers. The speed is measured using magnetic reluctance type sensor and 60 teeth gear wheel. The sensor directly generates TTL output. The speed indicator has also builtin diagnostics to indicate failed sensor or broken sensor wires. The load/torque indicator uses 6 wire load cell system that offers high end accuracy. Electronic controller also incorporates safety circuits like dynamometer body temperature high (HI-T), cooling water low pressure safety (LO-P). High excitation current safety (HI-C). Over speed safety (HI-N) etc. If any safety limit gets crossed, the excitation current is cut off and LED of that particular safety glows. This helps to rectify fault. Optionally, we can provide computer interface and automation in engine/motor testing. Eddy current dynamometer as a loading device.The instrumentation consist of combustion pressure sensor , rotary encoder, Temperature transmitters, differential pressure transmitters, load transmitter , flow transmitter with ADC and DAC Cards.ALabview software is used for the data acquisition and analysis. The air box with orifice plate and manometer is provided for measurement of air to the engine. A fuel tank with fuel measuring unit with scale is provided.

The Eddy Current Dynamometer is Bi-directional, Dry-gap Type. In a dry gap unit, the only resistance to movement of the rotor is that of bearing friction and the small effect of windage. With zero excitation, an almost no-load condition can be achieved over the entire speed range. The construction comprises of a thin spoked steel rotor revolving in a casing that houses the field coil and the heat exchanger. When excitation current is generated in the coil, a magnetic flux is developed. An equal and opposite magnetic field is induced in the heat exchanger walls facing the rotor. This field is pulsating corresponding to the RPM of the rotor. The changing field produces Eddy Currents in the heat exchanger walls that oppose the excitation field and thus causing retarding action to be imposed on the rotor. The magnetic flux lines developed in the rotor can be kept to a minimum thickness, resulting in a low moment of inertia.

Eddy Current Dynamometers (ECD) cater to a wide range of requirements of Prime Movers from 10 to 100 BHP with RPM varying from 1500 to 5000 RPM. These are widely used for testing of engines in Production, R&D, and Quality Assurance. Rugged construction and effective power absorption ensure long working life. ECD compromises of : Rotor Shaft, Stator Casing, Base plate, Trunnion support, Excitation coil, load cell, cooling water flow lines, calibration lever, Hot Air Passages Principle Of Operation : When ECU is connected to excitation coils, the current flowing generates magnetic field. When the toothed rotor is produced in the end wall of cooling chambers. This Eddy Current builds an opposing magnetic field and decelerates the rotor. Thus braking torque is transferred to load cell thru Advantages : Easy of assembly, wide power range, disc rotor and hence low inertia, very high response to change in input signals, long life uses and long servicing intervals, easy maintenance due to less components, low downtime due to simple mechanical design. Models : TME10, TME20, TME30, TME50, TME100, TME200 and TME300 are suitable fpr 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 200 & 300 BHP capacities respectively.
