In the evaporation process, concentration of a product is accomplished by boiling out a solvent, generally water. The recovered end product should have optimum solids content consistent with desired product quality and operating economics.

A multiple-effect evaporator is an apparatus for efficiently using the heat from steam to evaporate water. In a multiple-effect evaporator, water is boiled in a sequence of vessels, each held at a lower pressure than the last. Because the boiling temperature of water decreases as pressure decreases, the vapour boiled off in one vessel can be used to heat the next, and only the first vessel (at the highest pressure) requires an external source of heat. While in theory, evaporators may be built with an arbitrarily large number of stages, evaporators with more than four stages are rarely practical except in systems where the liquor is the desired product such as in chemical recovery systems where up to seven effects are used. An evaporator is essentially a heat exchanger in which a liquid is boiled to give a vapour, so that it is also, simultaneously, a low pressure steam generator. It may be possible to make use of this, to treat an evaporator as a low pressure boiler, and to make use of the steam thus produced for further heating in another following evaporator called another effect.

In multiple-effect evaporators the heating medium in any subsequent effect is the vapor generated in the previous effect and thereby achieves a great steam economy. The purpose of TVR in a multiple effect evaporator is to compress the product vapor from an effect, to a higher temperature level by means of a steam ejector (TVR) to use it as the heating medium in that effect itself thereby reducing the prime steam consumption.

Evaporation deals with the concentration of a non-volatile Solute from a solution by the removal of required amount of volatile solvent. Usually the solvent is water. By vaporizing a part of the solvent, useful product i.e. the concentrated solution or thick liquor is produced and the Vapor is discarded. Lung tube evaporators are usually used for the concentration of foamy liquids. The set-up is consists of two evaporators fitted in series. Each is made up of Stainless Steel tubes surrounded by a Stainless Steel jacket and fitted with accumulator. Dilute solution is feed to the first evaporator. Steam from. a steam generator is supplied to evaporator to concentrate the dilute feed solution to a desired level. The jacket is fitted with a steam trap and the condensate is collected at the end of trap. The vapors of volatile solvent produced in first evaporator are supplied to the second evaporator. The vapors of volatile solvent are condensed in a shell & tube type condenser and the balance non-volatile solute collected in the accumulator is recycled through the evaporator.

Sn Aqua System involved in offering the wide range of multi effect evaporators. The multiple-effect configuration combines two or more evaporator bodies to conserve steam, which is condensed in the first-effect heat exchanger only. Water evaporated in the first-effect vapor body is condensed in the second-effect heat exchanger, which provides energy for evaporation in the second-effect vapor body (and so on for additional effects). Vapor from the last effect flows to a condenser.       The last-effect vapor body is maintained at a high vacuum with a steam-jet air ejector or mechanical vacuum pump. The driving force is the pressure drop from the first to the last effect. For the same overall pressure differential and process conditions, the evaporator with more effects will require less steam.  The chief factor influencing the economy of an evaporator system is the number of effects. By increasing the number of effects we can increase the economy of an evaporator system.
