Solar power is the cleanest and most reliable form of renewable energy available, and it can be used in several forms to help power your home or business. Solar-powered photovoltaic (PV) panels convert the sun's rays into electricity through electrons in silicon cells using the photons of light from the sun. This electricity can then be used to supply renewable energy to your home or business.
What are the main components of a Solar Power system?
Solar modules
Solar modules are the source of power producing DC current. Capacity of solar modules is measured in terms of Watt Peak (Wp). For eg: a 250Wp solar module should deliver 250Watts of power at peak sunlight of the day.
Solar inverters
Solar inverters convert the DC current produced by the modules into AC current that can be used to run most appliances such as lights, fans, refrigerator, TVs, etc. It conditions the power supply ensuring the output is within specified voltage & frequency ranges.
Solar batteries
Solar batteries are specially designed with low self-loss and best charge acceptance characteristics for solar applications.
Types of Solar Power Systems
OFF GRID SYSTEMS
Power is supplied from solar modules & diesel generator (optional)
Power is stored in a battery which is used to run the loads.
A diesel generator can be connected to the inverter to supplement the power generated by the solar modules.
A DC to DC charge controller can be used specifically to run DC loads.
GRID CONNECTED SYSTEMS
In grid-connected or grid tied systems, power is supplied by the modules to the inverter which is first used to run any loads and surplus is exported to the grid.
Power is stored in a battery which is used to run the loads. There are no batteries in this case and in case of a power failure, the unit shuts down to prevent accidents that could be caused to linesmen.
The inverter can be integrated with a diesel generator to provide instant power during a grid failure.
HYBRID SYSTEMS
Hybrid systems have the capabilities of both grid export as well as battery storage.
Batteries can be charged using the solar modules, grid or diesel generator. The rate of charge can be adjusted accordingly depending on the operational strategy.
Power is exported to the grid when there is surplus and when grid is available.
