Coated VICRYL Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures, but not for use in cardiovascular or neurological tissues. This suture, being absorbable, should not be used where extended approximation of tissue is required. Progressive loss of tensile strength and eventual absorption of Coated VICRYL Suture occurs by means of hydrolysis. Absorption begins as a loss of tensile strength followed by a loss of mass.

This treatment produces roughly twice the stitch-holding time of plain catgut, but greater tissue inflammation occurs. Full tensile strength is extended to 18–21 days. It is brown rather than straw-colored, and has improved smoothness due to the dry presentation of the thread (plain catgut is wet). It is otherwise similar to plain catgut.

Therefore a suture with higher tissue tension will have a greater chance of failure prior to the amount of time listed above.
