Tooth extraction is the removal of teeth from its socket.Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, but most commonly to remove teeth which have become unrestorable because of tooth decay, periodontal disease or tooth trauma , especially when they are associated with toothache.Sometimes wisdom teeth are stuck and are unable to grow normally into the mouth and may cause infections of the gum . Immediately after the tooth is removed, a bite pack is used to apply pressure to the tooth socket and stop bleeding .The area should not be touched with a finger or tongue and should avoid vigorous rinsing of the mouth and avoiding strenuous activity .Sucking through a straw should be avoided.If the blood clot is disturbed, bleeding can restart ,or dry socket which is very painful can be developed .This may lead to delayed healing of the socket .Smoking is avoided for at least 24-48 hours as it impairs wound healing .Also, antibiotics are prescribed to reduce risk of certain post extraction complications
