Calamus essential oil is highly valued as an aromatic stimulant and tonic and it is implemented for nervous complaints, vertigo, headaches, and dysentery. Since it acts as a carminative it also brings relief from the discomfort caused by flatulence, by directly containing the growth of bacteria responsible for this malady. Calamus essential oil can also be used to increase appetite and assist digestion when it is given as a fluid extract, an infusion or as a tincture. The calamus root, also known as Acorus calamus, has been traditionally used for smoking, eating, and for brewing with tea, decoction, herbal extracts, chosen tinctures and syrups. In Ayurveda it is called Vacha and it is considered to be is a "sattvic" herb, and is considered as the strongest sexual stimulant directly offered by nature. In many Greek and European cultures the calamus root has been used as remedy for thousands of years. In fact its usage was so prevalent that its mention appears in Biblical texts as one of the ingredients of the "holy anointing oil". It blends well with lavender, tea tree, rosemary, clary sage, geranium, marjoram. The calamus essent oil is extracted by steam distillation. Calamus is a perennial, semi-aquatic, marshy plant, native to northern Europe and Asia and naturally, it mostly grows around water bodies. As partly mentioned above the calamus root of this plant is used in herbal medicine for the treatment of nervous complaints, vertigo, headaches and dysentery.
