Welding Rotators are probably the most versatile and usefull positioning equipment in a fabrication shop . Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding became an overnight success in the 1940s for joining magnesium and aluminium. Using an inert gas shield instead of a slag to protect the weldpool,the process was a highly attractive replacement for gas and manual metal are welding. TIG has played a major role in the acceptance of aluminium for high quality welding and structural applications. The process may employ direct current with positive or negative electrode or alternating current. In general, ac is preferred for welding aluminum and magnesium. Direct current electrode negative is preferred for welding most other materials and for automatic welding of thick aluminum. Thin magnesium sometimes is welded with direct current electrode positive. When ac is used with argon shielding, an arc cleaning action is produced at the joint surfaces on aluminum and magnesium. This cleaning action removes oxides and is particularly beneficial in reducing weld porosity when welding aluminum. When using dc, helium may be used as the shielding gas to produce deeper penetration. However, stringent precleaning of aluminum and magnesium parts is required with helium shielding. Argon and helium mixtures for gas shielding can provide some of the benefits of both gases. Regardless of polarity, a constant current (essentially vertical volt-ampere characteristic) welding power source is required. In addition, a high-frequency oscillator is generally incorporated in power sources designed for GTAW. High-frequency can be employed with dc to initiate the arc instead of touch starting to minimize tungsten electrode contamination. Normally, the high frequency is turned off automatically after arc ignition. The high frequency power is normally operated continuously with ac to maintain ionization of the arc path as the arc voltage passes through zero.

Submerged arc welding (SAW) is a s e m i - a u t o m a t i c o r f u l l y a u t o m a t i c consumable electrode arc process in which the arc is protected by a granular, fusible flux which blankets the weld puddle and surrounds the base metal to protect it from the atmosphere. Powder alloys can be added with the flux to utilize the existing heat produced by SAW to melt powders and thereby increase deposition rates. The flux stabilizes the arc, provides slag coverage, and also controls the properties of the deposit. Consumables are in the form of wire or strips. An arc is maintained between the end of a bare wire electrode and the work. As the electrode is melted, it is fed into the arc by a set of rolls, driven by a governed motor. Wire feed speed is automatically controlled to equal the rate at which the electrode is melted, thus arc length is constant (similar to MIGMAG - constant voltage). The arc operates under a layer of granular flux, hence submerged arc. Some of the flux melts to provide a protective blanket over the weld pool. The remainder of the flux is unaffected and can be recovered and re-used, provided it is dry and not contaminated.

The orifice in a torch cutting nozzle is designed to constrict the arc to a specific diameter without the arc touching the nozzle. The plasma gas provides a thin boundary layer of cool gas between the arc and the nozzle. If the current level is to high or gas flow is to less the arc may contact the cutting nozzle causing a double arc which will damage the nozzle by increasing its diameter disproportionately. Thus proper constriction will not be achieved resulting in a poorly focused arc and a bad cut finish. If a nozzle is gouged on the inside or outside or if the hole is worn out of round it should be replaced--otherwise it may be reusable. When the nozzles wear out cut quality deteriorates . Gouges on the inside indicate that too high current or inadequate air flow was used. Touching the job , piercing or cutting too fast can damage the nozzle from the outside .
