This process provides an improvement in air quality resulting from the additional rate of moisture removal and the capacity to treat higher rates of outside air. It also reduces the energy burden at no additional cost; a heat pipe is a completely passive device and is driven only by the temperature difference imposed by the cooling coil.By using a wrap-around heat pipe in the primary air handling unit operating costs can be reduced by up to 30%. At the same time, the overall capital expenditure is unlikely to change as the cost of the heat pipe is offset by the reduced capital expenditure on the lower capacity cooling system and the reduction in reheat equipment.
