Autoreclosers can be installed in branch feeder lines in a power distribution system or in a Ring Feeder arrangement for a simple Distribution Automation system. It has been observed that about 70% of faults in a power distribution system are Transient Faults typically less than 100 milli-seconds. With an Autorecloser capable of providing up to 4 reclosing operations each operation user configurable the Autorecloser can monitor the state of the fault on every close. If the fault has been transient then supply is restored. In the case of a permanent fault the Recloser will lockout and isolate the fault. This increases reliability of supply. For the Ring Feeder arrangement they can be set to isolate the faulty section and restore supply to the maximum number of users.
