Sorbitan monostearate is an ester of sorbitan (a sorbitol derivative) and stearic acid . The sorbitol end of the molecule is very soluble in water. The stearic acid end is soluble in fats. These properties make the molecule very good at making emulsions of oil and water. It is used to maintain a suspension of water and oil in a variety of products, and particularly in chocolates to maintain colour and shine. It produces stable OW emulsions with good aesthetics

SMO is a low HLB surfactant suggested for use as a wo emulsifier or as an ow emulsifier for use in cosmetic formulations, oil field chemicals, plastics, household products, coatings and textiles. The liquid sorbitan ester explosive grade functions as a low HLB nonionic emulsifier. This product is well suited for a broad number of applications including emulsifier in explosives.

EGMS is also internationally know as Glycol Stearate glycol monostearate or abbreviated as EGMS. It is an ester of stearic acid and ethylene glycol that is used as a low HLB emulsifier.It has several functions: emulsion stabilizer, opacifyingpearlizing agent, and skin-conditioning agentemollient.

Glycerol monostearate is commonly known as GMS, It is a white, odorless, and sweet-tasting flaky powder that is hygroscopic. It is a glycerol ester of stearic acid. It contains both water and oil soluble groups in one molecule which enables it to be a very effective emulsifier. GMS is of high nutritive value, non toxic and therefore very suitable for use in food formulations. It belongs to the class of non-ionic emulsifiers.

Glycerol monooleate is prepared by esterification of commercial oleic acid that is derived either from edible sources or fatty acids. It is a synthetic, biodegradable amphiphilic, lipid compound with many applications. It is a nonionic surfactant , A good general purpose emulsifier having low toxicity characteristics. It is a very useful low HLB co-emulsifier for forming either oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions.
