The Crude Vegetable Oil contains small amounts of naturally occurring materials such as proteinaceous material, free fatty acids and phosphatides. The most common method of refining oil is by reacting it with an alkali solution which neutralizes the free fatty acids and reacts with the phosphatides. These reacted products and the proteinaceous materials are then removed by centrifuge. Following alkali refining, the oil is washed with water to remove residual soap, caused by saponification of small amounts of oil. Color-producing substances within oil such as carotenoids and chlorophyll are removed by bleaching process, which employs the use of adsorbents like acid activated clays. Volatile components are removed by deodorization which is performed under high temperature and vacuum. Finally, the refined vegetable oil is filtered and is used for the further respective purposes.   There are 2 refining methods in the vegetable oil refinery plant: Chemical Refining Physical Refining   1) Chemical Refining   The chemical method of refining removes the Free Fatty Acids and other impurities in a chemical way by Acid-Base neutralization process. Caustic soda is used as a base for this method. The addition of Caustic Soda to the acid completes the neutralization. This results in the formation of sodium soaps and gums which are then separated by Separators & Centrifuges. The neutralized oil is subsequently bleached and deodorized.Chemical refining is most widely used method for refining all types of crude oils such as groundnut oil, soya oil, sesame oil, corn oil, castor oil, cottonseed oil sunflower oil etc.   2) Physical Refining   The physical method of refining removes the Free Fatty Acids in single stage of deodorization process while the gum content from the crude oil is removed in the degumming process. Some crude oils contain non-hydratable phospholipids which are not removed by chemical refining. For that, physical refining is to be done. The technician will start the machines and will also train the local operators to run the oil mill.The oilseeds are allowed to undergo the required decorticating, cracking or separation. The separation of kernels and husks is must in order to get better oil recovery from oilseeds. Groundnut Decorticator, Sunflower Cracker, Palm nut Cracker, Copra Cracker, Coconut Cutter etc play their respective roles in the seed processing.The boiler unit should be installed very near to the oil expeller and not at a far distance. Generally it is advisable to have a separate boiler room. The steam from the boiler is allowed to enter the cooking kettle. The fuel for the boiler can be husks, wood or any agricultural waste. The need for boiler is eliminated if electric cooking kettle is used.Cooking kettle is mounted on top of the expeller. The oilseeds are fed into the cooking kettle. A little addition of water is given to the oilseeds to increase the moisture content. Steam, water and continuous stirring will cook the oilseeds making them soft and ready for oil expelling.The oilseeds are then allowed to enter the expeller chamber by opening the outlet gate from cooking kettle. The expeller crushes the oilseeds. The heated oilseeds are squeezed by the circular rotating worms and significant pressure of worms will extract the oil from the oilseeds. The crude oil is collected in the oil tank and oil cake is collected separately. The oil cake is gathered in the jute bags and can be used for cattle feeding or solvent extraction. The crude oil from the oil tank is pumped to the filter press. Moreover, the Catchalls with 40 Ft. tower and the Barometric Condenser are also not shown here.     The Process Description for Edible Oil Refining is stated as under: For refining any crude edible / non-edible oils, there are mainly three basic processes which are carried out in the refinery plant.   Neutralization Process   First process is neutralization in which the oil is neutralized in order to remove the Free Fatty Acids (FFA) by adding caustic soda. Oil is heated up to about 60°C by thermic fluid coils and oil is stirred by the stirrer. Soap stock formed due to chemical reaction is allowed to settle at the bottom of the neutralizer from where it is taken out into respective soap pans.   Bleaching Process   The neutralized oil is then transferred for the bleaching process where the color of the oil is removed. The bleaching process is carried out with the help of respective chemicals such as carbon black, bleaching earth etc. Oil is heated up to high temperature of around 100°C under vacuum with continuous stirring operation.   Deodorization Process   The bleached oil then goes to the filter press where the spent chemicals are separated and clean bleached oil is obtained. This oil goes to deodorizer where the oil is to be heated above 110°C and under vacuum by providing live steam from the bottom. The temperature of the oil is raised up to certain limits. The entire process of deodorization is very crucial for the quality of the oil. Finally, the smell and unpleasant odor from the oil is removed.   Cooling Process   The high temperature oil is to be cooled in the cooler where the water circulating coils take away the heat. The cooled oil is again allowed to pass through the filter press for the final filtration process. Finally, totally clean, filtered, refined transparent oil is obtained at the output.During entire refining operation, all the equipments such as thermic fluid boiler, vacuum pump, vacuum equipments, barometric condenser, catchalls, steam generators, oil filters, electric motors, oil pumps etc. play their respective role. So all these equipments are very important parts of the refinery and they are connected with the vessels through pipelines.   Dewaxing Process   Some oils such as corn oil / maize germ oil and sunflower oil contain considerable amounts of waxes in them. Sometimes these waxes give very hazy appearance to the oil and it is advisable to remove these waxes. In such cases separate dewaxing process is carried out. Our Tinytech refinery plants are equipped with dewaxing units in order to remove the waxes from the oil and making it more stable and palatable.   Fractionation Process   For refining the palm oil, the above method is carried out with slight process modifications. There is addition of few extra equipments in the refinery such as chilling plant, crystallizer etc and the fractionation method is performed. Cooking Oil Refining is a method to remove unwanted and undesirable elements like Free Fatty Acids (FFA), Gums, Phospholipids, Waxes, Soaps, Odor and Color etc. from the cooking oil and to improve overall quality of cooking oil. The entire process is carried out in various steps such as Degumming, Neutralizing, Bleaching, Dewaxing, Winterizing and Deodorizing. Description for Cooking Oil Refining Process-   Degumming Method   This is the first step in refining and is also known as the Pretreatment Process. In the degumming process, the gums are precipitated and separated by the centrifugal separation technique. If the gum content in the oil is low, only gum-conditioning is required to be done and there is no need to go for separate degumming process. The degumming can be carried out in the same neutralization vessel.   Neutralizing Method   Every cooking oil consists certain amounts of free-fatty acids FFA's that increase the rancidity in oil and is harmful for human consumption. In neutralization, the FFA's are removed by reacting them with caustic soda- NaOH in the neutralizer at a certain temperature and performing the stirring. In this way, FFA gets separated in the form of soap stock. Tinytech offers neutralization units.   Bleaching Method   The color pigments in the oil are removed in the bleaching process. The neutralized oil is treated with certain chemicals like activated earth which removes the color from the cooking oil. This process is also carried out under temperature. The bleached oil is then filtered so that the added chemicals and particles are separated from the oil.   Deodorizing Method   The deodorization is an important process in the cooking oil refining. This process is used to remove the odor from the oil. Every oil contains certain typical natural color. During the previous processes, certain unwanted odor is applied on the oils. The deodorization process removes this odiferous material. It is carried out under high temperature and vacuum systems. At the completion of the process, we get the deodorized-odorless cooking oil.For sunflower oil and corn oil, separate dewaxing process is carried out and for palm oil; separate fractionation process is carried out.     Batch Type Cooking Oil Refining Process The batch type refining method is the oldest and the most widely used method for chemically refining of cooking oils. This type of oil refining process is used for smaller capacity refinery plants from 3 tons/day to 30 tons/day. The batch type process is generally preferred because it has low cost, low effluent generation, easy maintenance and easy to operate making it economically more viable. Numerous TINYTECH batch refinery plants are operational at various places refining different cooking oils.     Continuous Type Cooking Oil Refining Process The continuous oil refining line is used for capacities higher than 30 tons/day and up to 500 tons/day. This method is used for where the cooking oils contain higher FFA content.
