Cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from an air stream, without the use of filters, through vortex separation. Rotational effects and gravity are used to separate the particle from the dust laden air. Cyclone body will be cylindrical in the top portion and conical shape at the bottom as shown in the drawing. The air stream will enter into the cyclone body tangentially in the top cylindrical with high velocity. The top portion of the cyclone body guides the air to move in a circular path in high velocity. A cyclonic effect (twister) will be created inside the body and the air stream move downwards in the heavier dust particles in the helical pattern. The heavier particles in the air stream have too much inertia while moving in cyclonic effect and move towards outer peripheral of the cyclonic effect in the air stream. When the particles are striking the inner surface of the cyclonic body, it will lose its momentum and fall down. In a conical system, as the rotating flow moves towards the narrow end of the cyclone, the rotational radius of the stream is reduced, thus separating smaller and smaller particles.               Cyclone is called as pre-collector in the dust extraction system. Cyclone has good efficiency in dust separation for large size particles and fiber dust particles. Cyclone separator will be used to segregation of items or products in the conveying systems. Cyclone separators are devices that are used to separate dust from dust laden gases typically when the dust particle size is 20 microns or more. Filtration efficiencies in cyclones are not as good as Bag Filters, however the maintenance cost of cyclones is much lesser than that of Bag Filters.

Centrifugal collectors use cyclonic action to separate dust particles from the gas stream. In a typical cyclone, the dust gas stream enters at an angle and is spun rapidly. The centrifugal force created by the circular flow throws the dust particles toward the wall of the cyclone. After striking the wall, these particles fall into a hopper located underneath. The most common types of centrifugal, or inertial, collectors in use today are: Single-cyclone : separators They create a dual vortex to separate coarse from fine dust. The main vortex spirals downward and carries most of the coarser dust particles. The inner vortex, created near the bottom of the cyclone, spirals upward and carries finer dust particles.   Multiple-cyclone : separators Also known as multiclones®, consist of a number of small-diameter cyclones, operating in parallel and having a common gas inlet and outlet, as shown in the figure. Multiclones® operate on the same principle as cyclones—creating a main downward vortex and an ascending inner vortex. Multiclones® are more efficient than single cyclones because they are longer and smaller in diameter. The longer length provides longer residence time while the smaller diameter creates greater centrifugal force. These two factors result in better separation of dust particulates. The pressure drop of multiclone® collectors is higher than that of single-cyclone separators.
