Refrigerated air dryers are the most advanced and cheapest mode of drying compressed air. This dryer operates on the principle that cooling of the compressed air. causes condensation of water carried by the compressed air in vapour form. In the refrigerated type of air dryer the cooling takes place in two stages. The compressed air at about 40 Degree C, which enters the Refrigerated type air dryer, first enters the Precoofer . In the precooler the incoming hot-wet air is cooled by the outgoing cool-dry air. In the bargain the outgoing cool-dry is heated upto operating temperature of about 28 – 32 degree C.The hot-wet air, now partially cooled. enters the evaporator. In the evaporator, this partially cool air is chilled down to a temperature of about 2 to 8 degree C. Due to this chilling, the moisture carried by air in vapour form is condensed. This chilled air, carrying condensed moisture, then travels into the moisture separator. The moisture separator is a mechanical equipment, in which the condensed moisture is separated from the air by mechanical action. This moisture is drained out from the moisture separator with the help of an automatic drain valve. This dry-cool air is then passes through the precooler as discussed before. By this process you get dry air at the outlet with a pressure dew point temperature of about 4 Degree C or as required. (but above 2 degree C). In case of refrigerated air dryers, the power consumption for air dry- ing is approximately 5.0 kwh for 1000 cubic feet per minute of air.

The wet Air / Gas stream is split at the air dryer inlet through a differential distributor valve. Part of this air / gas stream is passed through an external heater and heated to a regeneration temperature of 160-180°C, then it is fed to the Adsorber desiccant tower A containing Silica gel or activated Alumina / Molecular Sieves under regeneration thus removing out the moisture from the desiccant bed. A water cooled / air cooled aftercooler condenses the desorbed moisture which is discharged regularly through the automatic drain trap . after condensation This Air/ Gas stream joins the main incoming air stream and goes for drying to the other tower B under drying. Normally a Cycle time of 8+8 hrs is utilized to complete one cycle of operation. After each operation the changeover is effected automatically. This type of dryer provides an outlet Dew Point of -40 deg C. When the temperature of air is reduced the moisture gets condensed and then it will be separated. Working of dryer consists of two main cycles. One is �Air cycle� and the second is �Vapour Compression Refrigeration Cycle� In the first cycle the wet inlet air with temperature 45-50oC enters the pre-cooler where it gets cooled by the outgoing dry air. The temperature of outgoing dry air rises due to transfer of heat with inlet air. The temperature of wet air is reduced to 27-30oC and then it enters the evaporator. In evaporator the air will be cooled up to 3-5oC by vapour compression Refrigeration cycle, after that air enters in to moisture separator where moisture is removed from condensed air. The dry air goes to the pre-cooler before going out from the dryer. There is option for the condenser in vapour compression cycle, i.e. Water Cooled Condenser OR Air Cooled Condenser. How does it work? Refrigeration Dryers operate on the method of cooling the air to near freezing point to remove the moisture and reheating it to approximately 10oC below the incoming compressed air temperature at nominal conditions. The Dryer consists of an air drying unit with cyclone type condensate separator and a refrigeration circuit.The Refrigeration circuit consists mainly of a compressor, a condenser, a receiver with liquid refrigerant and an evaporator. The air drying unit consists of two kinds of heat exchangers, one or more air to air heat exchangers and one or more refrigerant to air heat exchangers.
