The essential oil of tea tree is extracted through steam distillation of twigs and leaves of tea tree, which has the botanical name Melaleuca alternifolia. The oil possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Tea tree oil is applied to the skin (used topically) for infections.
