The important essential oil are extracted grass.   Description of Citronella Essential oil: Citronella plant ( Cymbopogon Nardus) are grasses. Citronella grass plant is native to tropical areas of asia. It is grown commercially in India, Burma And Sri lanka. Citronella grass can upto 5-6 feet (1.5 to 2) meters tall and 3-4 feet.  It is an aromatic grass belonging to poaceae family which gives essential oil upto steam distillation. The important essential oil are extracted grass. The oil is used extensively as a source of important perfumery chemicals like citronellal and geranoil content. Presently 300-500 tonnes of oil produced in india for last 6 years in the state of uttar pradesh and kerala. Areas receiving good and distributed rainfall throughout the year are suitable for cultivation of citronella. For the extraction of oil from any species of Cymbopogon the plant have to be identified and authenticated by a plant taxonomist. The leaves of citronella are collected and transported in plastics bags to the distillation area at room temperature 28Deg C. The leaves are then chopped before extraction as they provide maximum surface area so as to increase the amount of essential oil. The oil content of the leaves is affected by various factors such as soil climate age of the plantation and method of efficiency of distillation.   Distillation & Properties of Citronella Essential oil: Citronella oil is extracted from the species of Cymbopogon nardus through steam sistillation as are the most essential oils. The grass is placed in a chamber of the steaming still and as the steam heats up its pull the essential oil out of the leaves. The steam and oil then travel through the apparatus and when they a reach holding chamber the temperature cools causing it to re-liquify. The mixture is then carried through to the separator and the oils is siphoned off the water and used in essential oils while the fragrant water is commonly used to scent products.
