Zafran Kesar Attar
The word 'attar', 'ittar' or 'othr' is basically an Arabic word which means 'scent'; this in turn is believed to have been derived from the Persian word Atr, meaning 'fragrance'. Attar (Arabic: عطر) also known as ittar is a natural perfume oil derived from botanical sources, such as flowers (jasmine, rose, sandalwood and more), herbs, spices, or barks. Oils can also be expressed by chemical means but generally natural perfumes which qualify as Attars are distilled naturally. Once obtained, these oils are generally distilled into a wood base such as sandalwood and then aged. The aging period can last from one to ten years depending on the botanicals used and the results desired. A large number of references to cosmetics and perfumes in Sanskrit literature were found like in the Brhatsamhita is a 6th century Sanskrit encyclopaedia by Varahamihira (505 AD – 587 AD). Cosmetics and perfumes making were mainly practiced for the purpose of worship, sale and sensual enjoyment. Gandhayukti gave recipes for making scents. It gives a list of eight aromatic ingredients used for making scents. They were: Rodhara, Usira, Bignonia, Aguru, Musta, Vana, Priyangu, and Pathya. The Gandhayukti also gave recipes for mouth perfumes, bath powders, incense and talcum powder. The manufacture of rose water began perhaps in the nineteenth century AD. The earliest distillation of attar was mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita. The Harshacharita, written in 7th century AD in northern India, mentions use of fragrant agarwood oil. In ancient India, attar was prepared by placing precious flowers and sacred plants into a water or vegetable oil. Slowly the plants and flowers would infuse the water/oil with their delicate fragrance. The plant and flower material would then be removed and a symphony of their aromatic beauty would be held in the attar. These attars were then worn as a sacred perfume or to anoint. Some of the first lovers of Attars were the Mughal nobles of India. Jasmine attar was the favourite perfume of the Nizams of the Hyderabad state. Attar figures into some of the romantic stories of a bygone era. Its patrons included great poets like the legendary Mirza Ghalib. When Ghalib met his beloved in the winter, he rubbed his hands and face with attar hina. In Ain-e-Akbari, Abul Fazal, has mentioned that Akbar used attar daily and burnt incense sticks (bakhoor) in gold and silver censers. A princess's bath was incomplete without incense and attar. Avery popular attar with the Mughal princes was ood, prepared in Assam.

Cananga odorata, which is commonly called ylang-ylang, is a fast-growing tree and can found natively in tropical Asia such as Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and some other islands of Indian Ocean, mainly the Comoro, Nossi Be, and Madagascar islands. Commercial cultivation of C. odorata to produce ylang-ylang oil started in the Philippines, later followed by the production of cananga oil in Indonesia. The First World War almost destroyed ylang-ylang cultivation in the Philippines, only one plantation continuing cultivation until the Second World War. In the Philippines C. odorata is now a smallholder crop grown almost exclusively for local use. In 1770 C. odorata was brought from the Philippines to Réunion, where commercial production of ylang-ylang oil started a century later. Production grew steadily but declined sharply during the First World War; it never recovered, and production virtually ceased during the economic depression of the 1930s. In the beginning of the 20th Century C. odorata was introduced into the Comoro Islands, where an important industry developed. Production peaked during the 1980s, but then declined due to the development of tourism and expansion of food production. Similarly, an ylang-ylang industry developed in the northern Madagascan island Nosy Bé; it peaked around 1950 and then gradually declined. In Guangdong Province in southern China, production started recently and is still expanding. Indonesia, the Comoro Islands and Nosy Bé are the main exporters of ylang-ylang oil. Java is the main producer of cananga oil; outside Java, the production of cananga oil is only important in Fiji.

Floral water is obtained by the same process as the essential oil, namely by steam distillation of water. The flowers are crossed by water-steam. Once it is released from the container, the steam, which is enriched by the essential oil contained by the plants, is condensed in a coil that has been kept in cold. The recovered fluid is composed by essential oil and water: The floral water is the water naturally enriched by traces of essential oils (about 0.1%). The floral water concentration will be expressed as a percentage. A floral water at 50% means that 50 kg of dry plants were required to produce 100 kg of floral water.

Gaultheria procumbens L. (eastern teaberry, checkerberry, American wintergreen, Ericaceae) is a small, low-growing, evergreen shrub native to northeastern North America and widely cultivated all through the Northern Hemisphere due to its ornamental and medicinal value. The most used plant organs of G. procumbens are the leaves, traditionally valued as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents as well as a source of wintergreen essential oil. Methyl salicylate, constituting over 95% of the essential oil, and its glycosidic precursor—gaultherin—are the main representatives of salicylates, so far considered as the primary active constituents of Gaultheria plants. However, plant extracts are usually multi-component and their activity is rarely due to one, single constituent. Gaultheria procumbens, also called teaberry and checkerberry, has many short erect branches with short-stalked, thick, shining tooth-edged leaves in the upper part. Flowers hang singly from the leaf axils and have a pale pink, waxy-looking, urn-shaped corolla. The bright red berrylike fruits, sometimes called deerberries, consist of the much-enlarged fleshy calyx, which surrounds the small many-seeded capsule. The plant is a native of shady woods on sandy soil, particularly in the mountainous areas of the northern United States and southern Canada; it is hardy in England. Mountain tea, an infusion of wintergreen leaves, has been used in some parts of North America as a beverage.

Wheat (Triticum spp.) has a long history of crop domestication, which revolutionized human cultural evolution and led to the emergence of human civilization. Modern wheat cultivars mainly consist of two polyploid species such as hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) and tetraploid hard or durum wheat (Triticum turgidum) used for macaroni and low-rising bread. Another kind of cultivated diploid species einkorn wheat (Triticum momococcum) is a relic and only exists in some mountainous Mediterranean regions. Approximately 95% of the wheat currently grown worldwide is hexaploid bread wheat and the remaining 5% are mainly tetraploid durum wheat. Wheat is considered as the world's largest and most important cereal crop for human staple food, with an annual production of > 700 million tonnes produced globally over the past few years. Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil is an oil expressed or extracted from the germ of Triticum vulgare. One flower is produced per stem node. At most nodes, a male flower is produced, but a female flower or hermaphroditic flower appears at every seventh or eighth node. Modern cultivars are monoecious, but some old cultivars are andromonoecious. The flowers are less showy than those of melon and cucumber, being a bit smaller and lighter yellow. Watermelons require a long, warm growing season to mature and are usually grown for the consumption of their fresh, edible fruit flesh. Unlike melons and pumpkins, the part consumed is the placental region, or endocarp. In some regions, consumption of the seeds is important, too. Natural diuretic that washes from the inside. Lowers blood pressure. Soothes intestinal tract and stomach ulcers. Highly alkalizing (do not eat with other food since it lowers stomach acid). Vanilla planifolia is a species of vanilla orchid. It is native to Mexico, and is one of the primary sources for vanilla flavouring, due to its high vanillin content. Common names are Flat-leaved Vanilla, Tahitian Vanilla, and West Indian Vanilla. Often, it is simply referred to as "the vanilla". It was first scientifically named in 1808. Vanilla Extract, like the type that is used for baking, is made by macerating vanilla beans in ethanol or another form of alcohol. The ethanol serves as the solvent. Vanilla Oleoresin, to my understanding, is produced by taking Vanilla Extract and removing the ethanol or whatever solvent was used to originally produce the Vanilla Extract. Vanilla Oleoresin can be thicker than many essential oils. It depends on the Vanilla Oleoresin and on how much of the solvent has been removed. It can also depend upon your current room temperature. The cooler the oleoresin is, the thicker it will be to work with. By its nature, Vanilla Oleoresin dissolves best in water and alcohol-based solutions (i.e. a body spray). Unlike essential oils, Vanilla Oleoresin is lipophobic and does not properly dissolve in carrier oils.

The main source of commercially produced tea tree oil, Melaleuca alternifolia is an efficacious natural antiseptic once heralded as 'a medicine chest in a bottle'. The genus Melaleuca belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) and includes about 250 species (including the paperbarks, some of which are cultivated as ornamentals). Most Melaleuca species are restricted to Australia. M. alternifolia bears fluffy, white masses of flowers from spring to early summer, and its narrow leaves help distinguish it from the similar species M. linariifolia, which has wider leaves and flattish-spherical fruits. Tea tree is a member of a highly aromatic family, the myrtacea family, including myrtle, bay laurel, and sassafras for a start. These plants produce fragrant oils that both speed skin healing and kill off any bugs trying to cause skin infections. Tea tree is an excellent alternative to antibiotic cream and one that should be used to replace those nasty creams. This member of the fragrant family is native to Australia. It was used by the aborigines to treat wounds, cuts and abrasions long before the white man happened onto those shores. When the convicts made their way to the outback, they quickly learned of the wound antiseptic uses of this native plant. Like many other members of the myrtaceae family. A relatively new oil at the turn of this century, tea tree oil gained popularity during the Second World War. It was used by the British Navy to keep wounds from becoming infected. Beyond this, it was used in ammunition factories in Australia to keep workers hands free from infection following factory accidents. Early in this century doctors learned that when one applied tea tree to a wound, it did not become infected.

Chamomile is a plant that has been used since ancient Egypt in a variety of healing applications. Chamomile is a native of the Old World; it is related to the daisy family, having strongly scented foliage and flowers with white petals and yellow centers. The name chamomile is derived from two Greek words that mean “ground” and “apple,” because chamomile leaves smell somewhat like apples, and because the plant grows close to the ground. There are two varieties of chamomile commonly used in herbal preparations for internal use and for aromatherapy. One is called Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis), with contemporary sources in Belgium and southern England. Roman chamomile grows to a height of 9 in (23 cm) or less, and is frequently used as a ground cover along garden paths because of its pleasant apple scent. German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is grown extensively in Germany, Hungary, and parts of the former Soviet Union. German chamomile grows to a height of about 3 ft (1 m) and is the variety most commonly cultivated in the United States, where it is used medicinally. Moroccan chamomile is a member of the tansy botanical family and is like German chamomile since day both produce a deep, ink-blue color when in the form of an essential oil. Out of the two varieties, Moroccan chamomile has the highest levels of chamazulene; however, there are some chamomiles that are not blue in color. They are appelled Moroccan chamomile because they are a variety of chamomile that is a grown in morocco. True Tanacetum annuum is blue and contains the highest levels of chamazulene; however, there is some concern with Tanacetum annuum, also called blue tansy oil.

The wild cherry, Prunus avium, is a medium-sized deciduous tree with pure white flowers in spring, followed by small, red-purple cherries in summer. The fruits of Prunus avium are edible, but can be rather bitter, so opt for a cultivar if your main reason for growing it is to produce edible fruits. P. avium originated in the area between the Black and Caspian seas of Asia Minor. Birds may have carried it to Europe prior to human civilization. Cultivation probably began with Greeks, and was perpetuated by Romans, where it was believed to be an essential part of the Legionnaire’s diet (this lead to the spread throughout Europe). Trees were planted along roadsides and were valued for their timber as well as their fruit. Sweet cherries came to the USA with English Colonists in 1629, and later were introduced to California by Spanish Missionaries. In the 1800’s sweet cherries were moved west by pioneers and fur traders to their major sites of production in Washington, Oregon, and California. Cultivars selected at that time still form the base of the industry today. There are less than 100 sweet cherry cultivars grown in the major production regions around the world today. ‘Bing’, ‘Napoleon’ (syn. ‘Royal Ann’), ‘Ranier’, and ‘Lambert’ are the most important cultivars in North America. Pollinizers for ‘Bing’ are often ‘Early Burlat’, ‘Black Tartarian’, and ‘Van’. There are a few self-compatible cultivars such as ‘Stella’ and ‘Lapins’, but they are of poorer quality than ‘Bing’ and others that form the basis of the industry.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is grown as an oilseed crop worldwide in temperate and subtropical climates. Among oilseeds, sunflower generally ranks fifth behind soybeans, rapeseed, cottonseed, and peanuts, with an average annual world production of 21–27 million metric tons (Mt). Unlike soybean, sunflower is primarily an oil crop, with high protein meal being a by-product. Sunflower is grown on every continent, with Argentina, the former USSR, Eastern Europe, the European Union, and the United States being the largest producers. Sunflowers grow in dry areas, so they are heavily influenced by environmental conditions. Sunflower yield increased drastically after hybrids entered production in the 1980s, but sunflower yield has changed little right up to today. Therefore, sunflower breeders should investigate this lack of heterosis by planning new plant designs utilizing both land races and wild species. Seed yield is mostly related to three main characters: plants per hectare, seeds per plant, and seed weight. Physiologically, these traits are mostly related to higher photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, and water use efficiency rate. Sunflower oil is a non-comedogenic carrier oil which is highly absorbent and won’t clog pores. It’s non-irritating for most people, and can be used on all types of skin, including dry, normal, oily, and acne prone.
