Electrophoretic deposition (EPD), is a term that has a broad range of meaning, varying as per the different industrial processes within which it is used. The CED includes electrocoating, cathodic electrodeposition, and electrophoretic coating, or electrophoretic painting. Features The process is useful for applying materials to any electrically conductive surface. The materials which are being deposited are the major determining factor in the actual processing conditions and equipment which may be used. Colloidal particles suspended in a liquid medium migrate under the influence of an electric field (electrophoresis) and are deposited onto an electrode. Due to the wide utilization of electrophoretic painting processes in many industries, aqueous EPD is the most common commercially used EPD process. Electro coating is a form of painting which gives a metal an organic finish by using electrical current to deposit the paint on the surface of the component to be painted. The process work on the simple principle of “OPPOSITE’S ATTRACT”. The Paint particles are drawn to the metal part and paint is made to deposit on the component, forming an evencontinuous film over the surface, in every nook and corner, until the coating reaches the desired thickness. At the thickness the film insulates the component and the attraction of paint particle stops and electro coating is complete.

Electrocoating, which is also referred to as electro deposition, electrophoretic deposition, CED Coating, CED Painting or electropainting, is an organic finishing process that uniformly applies thin-film primers and one-coat finishes to metallic substrates. Electrocoating resembles electroplating in that it utilizes an electrical current to deposit a coating onto substrates. However, electrocoating deposits water born paint onto substrates rather than metal ions. The overall process consists of four main process steps: Pre-treating, Electrocoating, Rinsing, and Baking. The electrocoating process may be anodic or cathodic, depending on the charge applied the substrate. Although the processes are virtually the same, properties of the resultant coating are dissimilar. Anodic systems, which were the first to be used for electrocoating, apply paint to positively charged substrates. The negatively charged pigment and resin particles deposit onto the substrate (anode). One disadvantage of this process is that substrate metals dissolve and become incorporated into the coating, which affects surface properties. Cathodic electrocoating deposits paint onto negatively charged substrates and offers several advantages over anodic electrocoating.
