Hetal, Neil and Sajini got together to start this social enterprise. All this happened by a quirk of fate. Philosophically, we shall call it Karma (destined to be together according to the Hindu way of life)?
Neil a fashion designer saw his shop in Bhuj go underground in the January 2001 sinister earthquake. He came to Mumbai to start life from scratch. He opened a corner shop at a busy junction of Mumbai.
One day Sajini went past Neil's shop, which had displayed an exquisite array of Kutchi products. She entered and invited Neil to sell these beautiful products from her retail store Beauforts. Beauforts was established in 1942 in South Bombay and has retained its old world charm. The interior display units in maroon wood polish, made of old teak wood, gives the store a flavour of Saville Row in London, U K.
The founder of this store was an anglophile! Every effort is made to retain the ethos of the shop to retail these profoundly ethnic products. Sajini from the environmental community
encourages partnership between commerce and social entrepreneurship. Soon Hetal joined excited by this social venture operating on-line. And Indian Threads was created for webshopping.
Indian Threads believes it can bridge the discerning customer with an abundant wealth of traditional arts and crafts. Our affiliated NGOs, work with artisans in Gujarat in Western India, to help with developing traditional crafts. Gujarat State has an arid landscape and has been affected by drought since the past one and a half decade. The artisans produce some of the most vibrant colours in fabric and phenomenal embroidered designs. Urban officials of NGOs are stunned at the vivacity and versatility of products produced by these simple village folk.
Each of the masterpieces produced by an Indian villager makes a visible statement. In a world today when machines are throwing up so called perfect products, hand made and delicately finished products made in Gujarat.are a sheer joy to experience.
The mission of Indian threads is to draw the attention of modern folks to the values of traditional arts and creative expressions of these simple people with an appeal to help preserve one of the world's rich resource of ancient and living culture of Gujarat.
The long term goal of Indian Threads is to broaden its limited presence globally.
