This beam is sensed by receiver at another end. When this beam is interrupted by object, the receiver signal gets changed and signal is produced.

An encoder is a device ( transducer ) that is used to convert rotary or linear motion into useful information. The primary parameter determined are speed, velocity, distance, position, or direction.
