    A perennial herb that is grown and widely used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medical treatments to cleanse the respiratory tract, promote healthy digestion and relieve gas. It grows up to 40-60cm in height with round oval shaped leaves (2-4cm long). The flowers are present in compact clusters having purple to reddish colour and produces tiny rust – coloured fruit.In India, it is considered to be the most sacred of all the herbs and is found in almost every household. The plant is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes and for its essential oil. Soil &climate: Tulsi plant can be grown on any types of soils, however it is best cultivated in well drained, rich sandy loams soils having pH 5.5-7. It is grown in tropical and sub tropical climate conditions. It requires moderate annual rainfall with humid conditions for better yield. Land preparation:The land should be ploughed  2-3times to bring the soil to a fine tilth.  For better yield add around 15 tonnes of FYM before sowing and set up proper drainage to avoid waterlogged conditions.Propagation: Tulsi plant can be propagated through seeds or cuttings. For nursery raising of seedlings, prepare a bed size (4.5x1.0x0.2)m and apply manure. As the seeds are very small in size mix the seeds with sand in the ratio of 1:5 (approx). It is then sown in beds 2months prior to monsoon. The seed germinate in about 20-30 days and seedlings become ready for transplanting in about 60-90days. Seed rate: 2kg/acre Plant spacing: 5x5cm Irrigation: Water the plant in an interval of 3 days during summer followed by weekly interval during winter. Sprinkler or drip irrigation system can be used. Caution: Avoid water logged conditions Weeding should be done at regular intervals Harvesting & yield: The life span of tulsi plant is 1year. It is ready for harvesting after 3 months of planting when the plant reaches a height of 12inches.  The plant is cut leaving at least 15cm above ground level to ensure good regeneration for future harvests. In a year the estimated yield for dry leaves is 2000kg/acre where as 1000kg/acre for stems. Marketing:The global market for basil demand is wide spread across the globe for its Ayurvedic purposes.
