KEWIL Ring and Ball Apparatus Ring and ball apparatus is meant for determining soft point of bitumen. Using various scientific principles it is also used in petroleum industry, construction projects, paint industry etc. The ring & ball apparatus is used to determine the temperature at which a sample of bituminous material loaded by a steel ball of 9.5 mm diameter, drops a specified distance when heated under specified conditions. It is used to determine softening point of bitumen.

Often, existing concrete structures will need to be examined and tested to ensure the concrete remains of adequate strength and durability. Rebound hammer surveys can be conducted to provide a rough estimate of concrete strength, where it is not possible to determine this by more accurate means such as core extraction and testing. The test involves using a special rebound hammer, which measures the recoil of a piston against the concrete surface when a standard force is applied. This recoil can then be correlated approximately to concrete strength. The rebound hammer consists of a barrel in which is housed a hammer mass attached to an impact spring which slides on a guide bar. A plunger is attached to the guide bar which is pressed against the surface to be tested. As the piston is pressed against the surface to be tested, on reaching the compressive strength, the hammer mass is released and rebounds to a certain extent, according to the strength of the surface, which is indicated by a rider on a calibrated scale. A lock button fixed on the body of the hammer lock the rider in place and the rider can be reset to zero Position by using the same button. The equivalent compressive strength can be computed from the chart supplied. It is suitable for specimen of compressive strengths 100-700Kg/cm. The instrument, complete with a grinding stone for polishing the test surface, is supplied in carrying case.

The J-Ring test is used for determining the passing ability, the flow spread and the flow time of self compacting concrete as the concrete flows through the J-Ring apparatus. The J-Ring narrow gap with ø18 mm x 16 smooth bars is manufactured from stainless steel. The Slump Cone is made from sheet steel protected against corrosion, with diameters; top 100 mm, base 200 mm and with a height of 300 mm. The Base plate is 900x900x3 mm square, made of stainless steel with engraved circles of 200 mm and 500 mm diameter conforming to EN 12350- 8. The Steel weighted collar is used to stabilize the slump cone on J-Ring or slump flow tests. Minimum apparatus for the J-Ring test are J-Ring with narrow gap and slump cone.

The test is applicable to hot mix designs using bitumen and aggregates upto a maximum size of 25mm. In this method, the resistance to plastic deformation of cylindrical specimen of bitumenous mixture is measured when the same is loaded at periphery at 5 cm per min. This test procedure is used in designing and evaluating bituminous paving mixes. The test procedure is extensively used in routine test programmes for paving jobs. There are two major features of the Marshall method of designing mixes namely, a) Density – voids analysis b) Stability – flow tests. The marshall stability of mix is defined as a maximum load carried by a compacted specimen at a standard test temperature of 60ºC. The flow value is deformation the marshall test specimen under goes during the loading upto the maximum load, 0.25 mm units.
