Test rig consists of a Pelton wheel water Turbine, designed for laboratory experimental purposes and to conduct test in metric units. The specifications of the turbine are as follows:- Design Speed - 1000 RPM. Output Power - 1.0 KW The turbine consists of a cast iron body with a large transparent acrylic window, a nozzle and spear arrangement, a rotor assembly of shaft, runner and a brake drum all mounted on a sturdy base frame. The pelton buckets and nozzle are made of gun metal and the spear made of brass for corrosion resistance. The input to the turbine is controlled by adjusting the spear position with a hand wheel. A rope brake arrangement with a spring balance is provided for loading the turbine. The transparent perspex sheet side casing is provided for visual observation of flow on the buckets. Water inlet pressure is measured by a pressure gauge. Water to the turbine is provided by a centrifugal monoblock pump set of 5 HP capacity. The pump operates on 440Volts, 3 Phase, 50 Hz line. Other standard accessories include a DOL starter, switch, flow control gate valve, suitable piping. Flow measuring unit consists of a venturimeter with pressure taps connected to two pressure gauges mounted on a panel board. The complete test rig is mounted on a storage tank of suitable capacity. The tank is provided with FRP lining for total rust protection

The present set-up consists of a runner. The water is fed to the turbine by Means of Centrifugal Pump, radially to the runner. The runner is directly mounted on one end of a central SS shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement. The circular window of the tu ine casing is provided with a transparent acrylic sheet for observation of flow on to the runner. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of brake arrangement so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. A draft tube is fitted on the outlet of the turbine. The set-up is complete with guide mechanism. Pressure and Vacuum gauges are fitted at the inlet and outlet of the turbine to measure the total supply head on the turbine.

The setup is designed to study the Hydraulic Ram. Hydraulic Ram is used for pump little quantity of water to high head from a large quantity of water available at low head. It works on a principle of water hammer stating that “when flowing water is suddenly stopped in a long pipe a pressure wave travels along the pipe creating an effect of water hammer”. Set up consists of a pipe section fitted with a pulse valve and non-return valve, a supply reservoir on a stand which is connected to an overhead tank, an air vessel above the valve chamber smoothes cyclic fluctuations from the Ram delivery. Different pressure may be applied to the pulse valve to change the closing pressure and hence the operating characteristic. The flow rate of useful and waste water is measured using measuring tank and stop watch provided.
